This quarter, New Jersey stands out nationally, ranking among the top five states for homeowner housing wealth. Out of more than 965,000 anonymized home equity borrowing inquiries, local homeowners reported a median equity of about $295,000. That means half the people shopping for a loan or line of credit had even more equity to work with. Nearly three out of four New Jersey homeowners had at least $200,000 in equity, giving our state one of the strongest financial cushions in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Home equity is essentially the difference between what your home is worth and what you owe on your mortgage. It can build up over time, thanks to both rising property values and chipping away at the loan balance. Many Jersey owners use that equity for renovations, school expenses, or consolidating debts. But it\u2019s essential to confirm exactly how much equity you have, understand the true cost of borrowing, and avoid taking out more than you really need. Having spent over 14 years in real estate\u2014and with a builder\u2019s eye for both structure and value\u2014I always encourage clients to see not just the numbers, but the potential and risks beneath the surface.
